The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain
The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain by Charles Dickens (Annotated)
This is one of Charles Dickens's famous Christmas novel series. The story about Redlaw is a chemistry teacher who frequently broods over wrongs done to him and grief from his past.
He is haunted by a spirit who appears and offers Redlaw the opportunity to "forget the sorrow, wrong, and trouble you have known...to cancel their remembrance."
Redlaw is initially hesitant but eventually agrees. As a result of the ghost's intervention, Redlaw has no recollection of his past traumatic events. He feels a universal rage that he cannot explain. His venom spreads to the Swingers, Tetterbys, and his student.
All of them become as enraged as Redlaw. Milly is the only one who can avoid the bitterness. With this realization, the novel concludes with everyone returning to normalcy and Redlaw transformed into a more loving man. Redlaw, now a complete person, learns to be humble at Christmas.
